History / Background

In the 1980s, Madhya Pradesh already had a strong base of engineering and medical colleges, but the government aimed to make technical education even more accessible. The focus was on bringing opportunities to tribal regions that had long been left behind.

With this vision, Government Polytechnic Ambikapur was established on May 25, 1982. It became the 22nd polytechnic in the state, with the core mission of providing local tribal youth access to technical skills close to home.

Initially, the institute offered three core branches Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.Initially the admission was taken in Civil engineering. However, recognizing the Surguja region’s rich reserves of coal and bauxite, the government introduced the Mining and Mine Surveying department in the 1988-89 session. This ensured students received training aligned with local resources and job opportunities in nearby mines.

Currently, the college runs with 06 branches, each with an intake of 42 students. The college has over 400 students pursuing diplomas, supported by 32 highly qualified lecturers and 49 supporting staff members. Today, the college has its own 24-acre campus with a 1-lakh-square-foot building, comprising over 100 rooms, laboratories, workshops, a library, classrooms, a conference hall, sports ground, canteen, and gardens. The library houses approximately 40,000 books across various streams. The college provides a 52-bed girl's hostel and has permission to establish a 102-bed boy's hostel. There are also 31 quarters for staff accommodation.
